SPERDS – supporting poor children and women in India

By Milena Rampoldi and Denise Nanni, ProMosaik. Our next interview of today was conducted with Majety Sujatha of the organization SPERDS, a voluntary organization targeted in helping poor children and women. Sperds runs an orphanage and empowers women in India. 
 
How was founded SPERDS and with what aims?
 
Given the specific nature of the problems faced by women in the rural and tribal communities a micro level approach with a thorough understanding of the nature of the problems was necessary. And a few philanthropists ventured to address these problems, giving birth to SPERDS. Our aims are:
  • To impart education to the underprivileged in a healthy environment to build a strong communities, which in turn would contributes towards a stronger nation.
  • To establish orphanages for girls, giving them shelter, food, clothing and education. Thus, transforming them into employed and skillful independent individuals.
  • To collaborate with educational organizations to organize seminars and workshops for the girls to help them shape their careers.
  • To provide health services for adolescent girls, pregnant woman and educate the communities about child health, nutrition and sanitation.
What are the main social issues in your area of intervention?
 
·         Bonded labor and child labor
·         College/school dropouts
·         Child marriages
·         Malnourishment and food insecurities
·         Drought
 
 
 
In what ways do you promote communities empowerment?
 
  • Promote community development by providing motivation, education and proper skills to the members of the community.
  • Increase community resources by bringing people together.
  • Helping people understand the decision making and problem solving process.
  • Promote social justice participation and ownership.
  • Educating people about the social problems and creating platforms to discuss these problems and possible solutions. Inform them about the government initiatives for the same.
What activities do you carry on in order to promote women’s rights and empowerment?
 
  • Creating an environment for women where they can make decisions for their own personal benefit and career.
  • Improving the social, economic, political and legal strength of women. Educating women about their rights, making them confident to claim their rights. Thus ensuring equal rights for women.
  • Determining social & economic choices and creating equal rights in socio-economic justice to provide equal opportunity for education, employment and a safe/comfortable working environment. 
Do you cooperate with local authorities and institutions? If yes, how?
 
Yes we do. We involve the Women & Child department, M.R.O (Mandal Revenue Officer), Sarpanch of villages, DWCRA (Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas) group members in all our activities. The Police department is also involved in issues related to child marriages.
